JANUARY NEWSLETTER

National Association of Women’s Organisations
WRC was invited by the National Association of Women’s Organisations to take part in the first European Regional Consultation with Prof Yakin Eturk the Special Rapporteur to the United Nations on Violence against Women.

In connection with this event we made a presentation to an evening reception at the LSE, which was well received. The title was “Masculinity and Men’s Roles in Preventing  Violence Against Women: Championing Change” These two slides caused most comment during his presentation.

The one on the left is a comment made by a woman in the audience at a recent presentation. The other is a comment on Domestic Abuse drawn by a 10 year old child from a refuge in Scotland.

Benefit
The first White Ribbon Campaign Benefit took place at Hebden Bridge Trades Club with the band “Mean Business”. Over 100 people attended and £450 was raised. The money will be used to pay for the new Music banners to start off the music campaign. The local Amnesty International group also had a stand at the event.

PACE Meeting
Chris Green of the White Ribbon Campaign was invited to represent the Council of Europe Task Force on Violence against Women at an Exchange of Views meeting with the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly’s Committee on Equal Opportunities for Women and Men.

He also met many parliamentarians at the Parliamentary campaigns Information stand during the meeting. When Chris went to talk about trams into town with the staff at the Tourist Information Stand in the foyer, he discovered them wearing white ribbons.

Volunteers
Student Volunteers: students from Manchester Metropolitan University continue to work for the campaign, doing design work, press releases and planning stands in University buildings and benefit nights.

A meeting with Calderdale Voluntary Action has led to the listing of volunteer opportunities of working with White Ribbon to be listed on their volunteer opportunities.

Regional TUC

Hilary Benn MP, Secretary of State for International Development, expressed enthusiastic support for the campaign while visiting the Yorkshire and Humberside Regional TUC conference in York. Other Regional TUC officials also suggested ways in which the campaign could link with their members.
