Friday 26th June sees the opening night of WRC UK’s inaugural art exhibition which will run for two weeks, upto 7th July in Bar Place Hebden Bridge as part of Hebden Bridge Arts Festival activities. It is expected that it will turn into an annual event, and wil have spin off educational activities too.
White Ribbon Campaign UK had its first stand at a Pride event on June 20th. It was appropriate that it was our local - Calderdale - Pride parade and exhibition. We received lots of handprints onto a special These Hands are Not for Hurting banner, and have been invited to present it to Calderdale Council at a forthcoming council meeting.
Half of the donations received at the event have been sent to Broken Rainbow the charity working with LGBT victims of interpersonal violence.
WRC materials will be on their stand in Trafalgar Square at next week’s London Pride event .
White Ribbon Campaign UK staff will be travelling with Republica International team from Leeds to the Mondiale Antirazissti to be held in Bologna Italy in July . There, we will be co-operating in some joint education work with the Italian White Ribbon campaign, as well as playing in our first world cup. Republica International will be wearing special “Footballers working to end violence against women” shirts.
A workshop about White Ribbon activities was held as part of the Student Christian Movement AGM held in Leeds on June19th-21st.
There wer some excellent suggestions about how to expand the work including having a stand at GreenBelt festival, and working with Christian men’s groups , and Christians in Sport.
We ‘ve also had excellent contact with the team in Bury St Edmunds Diocese who have published and distributed sermon notes to help discussions around White Ribbon Day. They also pointed to the call to action by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York in the Archbishops Council 2006 “Responding to Abuse”.
Six people working in the office today - abd it’s not even a record, as next week we might have as m any as nine.

UNIFEM Ireland had a meeting with WRC UK to discuss revisatalising the Irish White Ribbon Campaign work. Two of the Board met with Chris Green to look at ways of working more closely together.
A three day visit to Guernsey resulted in 4 useful White Ribbon Campaign meetings with staff from the Sports Development Commission, a public meeting hosted by the Domestic Abuse Forum, and students from a primary school and a secondary school.
Actions were promised in three important sports activities- Rugby, Football and Cricket, to support the work which WRC is already doing in these areas. We supplied some cricket bat stickers, postcards and posters to get the ball rolling.
The public meeting was very well attended and a good discussion was help based upon the White Ribbon How to expand a campaign presentation.
With the younger school students the work focussed on an anti bulllying messge and they undertook handprints on the Guernsey says “These hands are not for hurting banner” while the secondary school students did some t-shirt design including the winning entry “You wouldn’t want someone to do this to you- so why do it to someone else”
